Christian Education for Children and Youth
First United Methodist Church
Taylorsville, NC
One thing that attracts families to a church is active programs for children
and youth.  We want to have things going on for our children and youth,
but we want the things we do to have a purpose.  In both areas we plan
our activities with the goal of bringing our children and youth closer to God
and to each other.  In the end we hope that the programs will have been
tools that shaped devoted disciples of Christ.

We develop Christian love in our children through fun and memorable
activities like going to the movies or taking a day trip to Emerald Pointe.  We
encourage compassion with projects like packing backpacks with food for
families in need of a little more.  We help children to learn how to encourage
by baking cookies and making a BIG Valentine for a special friend.  We help
them to realize the needs of others around the world by sponsoring a child
through
Compassion International.  We help our children to learn about the
grace and love of God through our high energy Sunday School program
called J-train.  We teach our kids that God is not just for us by taking VBS to
the community with our summer Kids In The Park Program.  As a child ages
out of the children’s department they are ready to step up to an active, but
balanced youth program.

Our youth meet weekly for discipleship on Sunday mornings in Sunday
School and on Sunday evenings in United Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Summer camp at Lake Junaluska moves youth out of comfort zones and into
a close encounter with God.  Youth learn to love each other with lock-ins
and lock-outs, movies, ski trips, laser tag, bowling… you know the fun stuff!
Our youth serve others by helping with the Angel Food Ministry and cleaning
the yard of a dear lady of the church.  Compassion is developed by going on
a mission trip to Atlanta, GA to help various ministries that serve the
homeless and homebound.  We raise money to fund our programs with
meals, dinner theaters and planting pink flamingos in yards.  When the time
comes for a young man or young woman to leave for college or career we
want them to look back and say these were great times.  Later as they
reflect on how their faith developed we hope they see God’s hand drawing
them close through our programs.
